Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana Pro: Which Should You Use?

Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1) is Google's Flash-tier image model, released October 6, 2026. Nano Banana Pro (gemini-3-pro-image) is the Pro tier, built on Gemini 3 Pro Image. Google positions 2.1 as the more efficient counterpart to Pro — and for most jobs it is the one to use. Here is where Pro still earns its price.

The short answer
  • Default to 2.1. It is Google's recommended model for new projects: Flash-tier speed and cost, adjustable thinking, Web and Image Search grounding, and aspect ratios from 1:8 to 8:1.
  • Pay for Pro when the job needs it: style reference images (2.1 has none), a fifth consistent character, or maximum fidelity on a dense, complex composition — at $0.134 per 1K or 2K image and $0.24 per 4K image.
  • Or use both: draft on 2.1, render the final on Pro.

Where Nano Banana Pro still wins

  1. Style references. Pro accepts up to 3 style reference images — "make it look like this". 2.1 does not support style references at all, so the look has to come from your words.
  2. A fifth consistent character. Pro takes up to 5 character references, 2.1 up to 4. That matters for group shots, ensemble casts and family portraits.
  3. Dense, high-stakes compositions. Pro always thinks before it renders and sits in Google's Pro tier. For text-heavy layouts where one wrong detail ruins the asset, it is the safer first attempt.
  4. 2K for the price of 1K. Pro bills 1K and 2K at the same 1,120 output tokens ($0.134). If you are paying for Pro, always ask for 2K.

Where Nano Banana 2.1 wins

  1. Cost and volume. 2.1 is Flash tier, and Google says it keeps Nano Banana 2's Flash-level cost. For scale: Nano Banana 2 lists at $0.067 per 1K image — half of Pro's $0.134.
  2. Speed you can tune. Set thinking to minimal for fast drafts or high for hard layouts. Pro's thinking is always on.
  3. Image Search grounding. 2.1 can pull web images from Google Image Search as visual context for real places and products. Pro grounds on web search only.
  4. Extreme aspect ratios. 1:4, 4:1, 1:8 and 8:1, with 2.1's tiling fix at 2K and 4K. Pro's list in the Gemini API docs runs from 9:16 to 21:9.
  5. More context, more input types. A 131K-token context window and video or PDF input — "a poster from this PDF brief", "a thumbnail from this video".
  6. Google's default. Google's image generation guide recommends 2.1 for all new projects.

Use both: draft on 2.1, finish on Pro

You don't have to pick one model for the whole job.

  1. Explore on 2.1. Generate variations at 1K with minimal thinking — fast and cheap.
  2. Pick the composition. Decide on layout, framing and copy while each attempt still costs little.
  3. Render the final on Pro. Pass the winning draft to Pro as a reference image, add up to 3 style references, and render at 2K or 4K.

Pro spend stays limited to the image that ships.

FAQ

Is Nano Banana 2.1 better than Nano Banana Pro?

Not across the board. 2.1 is the faster, cheaper Flash-tier model and Google's recommended default for new projects. Pro is the Pro-tier model: it adds style reference images, a fifth character reference and always-on thinking, at a higher price per image.

Does Nano Banana 2.1 support style reference images?

No. In Google's docs, style references are listed only for Nano Banana Pro, which accepts up to 3. With 2.1, describe the style in the prompt or use object references.

How much does Nano Banana Pro cost per image?

Google's Gemini API pricing page lists $0.134 per 1K or 2K image and $0.24 per 4K image at standard rates. The Batch API halves that to $0.067 and $0.12.

Can Nano Banana Pro use Google Search?

Yes, Pro supports grounding with Google Web Search. Image Search grounding, which uses web images as visual context, is documented for Nano Banana 2.1 and Nano Banana 2, not for Pro.

Does this site use Nano Banana Pro?

No. This site runs Nano Banana 2.1 only. For Pro, call the Gemini API directly with gemini-3-pro-image, or use the Gemini app.
